Multi-user dungeons (MUDs) are text-based virtual worlds that allow multiple users to interact with each other and the environment through a computer network. They originated in the 1970s and were an early form of online multiplayer gaming, serving as precursors to modern massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs).
